Morning rituals; detox and digestion tea

We have all heard of the ‘lemon juice and hot water in the morning’s’ thing but I think it can be pushed a whole lot further… namely by adding a variety of other ingredients; turmeric, ginger, Manuka honey and apple cider vinegar, to give you an incredible start to the day. When you wake up in the morning the first thing you should do (besides going to the bathroom, of course) is to go to your kitchen and make yourself a cup of this tea – the idea is to cleanse your palate, flush out your kidneys and liver of waste and toxins, reduce stress on your organs and get your digestion moving straight away, so that you start every day well.

But starting your day well isn’t all about what you eat or drink, it is also about setting aside some time to meditate, think and/or exercise.  This is not just some new age fluffy crap, honestly, it is actually a theory that originates from Indian philosophy, which has been maintained and proven for over a thousand years. According to this philosophy, the decisions we make regarding our daily routines either build endurance and resistance to disease or tear it down. Part of this teaching also highlights the importance of morning rituals to align the body and foster health and self-esteem. So starting a morning routine of this tea, followed by meditation or exercise and then a green smoothie is a good idea particularly if you feel as though you are in need of rebalancing your life (for example when you’re feeling overwhelmed and tired all the time).

BENEFITS:

In this concoction each ingredient has an expansive list of benefits – firstly the lemon contains high levels of Vitamin C, as well as citric acid, calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene, which help fight infections and improve immunity. Lemon is also a weight loss aid as it is high in Pectin Fiber, which helps control hunger and cravings.

Both lemon and apple cider vinegar are also great for clearing the skin and balancing your Ph levels (or improving your alkalinity). Having an alkaline diet is essential for preventing disease as well as issues like digestive, weight and mental troubles. Increasing your alkalinity also helps you lose weight faster as it improves digestion and cleanses the liver.

Manuka honey is a medically used anti-bacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral, and is also a potent antioxidant. It primarily helps to improve your immune system  (and can be used topically to reduce scars and treat wounds just so you know!), but it also promotes digestive health and helps with bloating, acid reflux, indigestion, and discomfort.

Ginger is another incredible ingredient – it is actually widely used throughout the world for treating the effects of cancer treatment (such as nausea or vomiting), respiratory infections, menstrual cramps, arthritis and muscle pain, as well as to counter act the liver damage of some prescription pain medications – So all of this just tells you how amazing this herb really is. Ginger is essentially a health promoting herb and will improve your liverand digestive function.

Lastly, is turmeric – I left it until last because it is perhaps one of the most efficient nutritional supplements in existence (which is why we have it in our Complex superfood powders). It is used for a variety of issues such as arthritis, heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhoea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems, gallbladder disorders, headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, leprosy, fever, menstrual problems, and cancer. As well as depression, Alzheimer’s disease, water retention and kidney problems.

That is a serious list!!

I am going to talk about the benefits of Tumeric and why we have it in our complex superfood powders in my next post but for now let me just tell you that taking turmeric in this tea will help you to prevent disease and inflammation, it will boost your brain function and mood, and improve your longevity.
